CHRISTUS Children’s has earned a Level 4 Epilepsy Center designation by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, the highest level of accreditation available.

This prestigious designation recognizes CHRISTUS Children’s for providing the most advanced level of medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for patients with complex epilepsy, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to delivering integrated, accessible and reliable care for children with epilepsy.

As part of the CHRISTUS Children’s Neurosciences Center, the program offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to care, bringing together pediatric neurologists, neurosurgeons, specialized nurses and support teams to ensure coordinated, patient-centered treatment close to home.

“This achievement reflects years of dedication to building a program that delivers highly specialized, compassionate care for children and families facing epilepsy,” said Dr. Fred Perkins, medical director of the comprehensive epilepsy program at CHRISTUS Children’s. “This designation reinforces our commitment to provide care that is not only advanced, but also accessible, reliable and deeply personal for every family we serve.”

As a Level 4 Epilepsy Center, CHRISTUS Children’s offers a full continuum of advanced diagnostics and treatments, including:

  • Comprehensive EEG services, including long-term video EEG monitoring
  • A dedicated Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) with 24/7 EEG technologist coverage and specially trained monitoring
  • Surgical treatment of epilepsy using Advanced Robotic Stereo EEG placement, laser ablation therapy or Neuromodulation therapies, including implantable devices for surgical control
  • Expert antiepileptic drug management
  • Specialized care for genetic epilepsies
  • Ketogenic diet therapy with ongoing nutritional management

The designation also highlights CHRISTUS Children’s ability to care for the most medically complex epilepsy cases in South Texas, reducing the need for families to travel long distances for specialized treatment. Through its Neurosciences Center, patients benefit from an integrated model of care that coordinates diagnostics, treatment and follow-up services in one location.

By combining innovative technology with a highly trained clinical team, CHRISTUS Children’s continues to expand access to life-changing neurological care while maintaining a strong focus on individualized treatment plans tailored to each child’s needs.

“This recognition strengthens our role as a regional leader in pediatric neurosciences,” Perkins said. “Most importantly, it ensures that families across San Antonio and beyond have access to the highest level of epilepsy care when they need it most.”
